      British tradition is that you swear to the monarch because the crown is sovereign. Any other oath is NOT a British oath

      They are swearing to the king, who is the head of state. He gives the constitutional power to the government, and the government meets in his name. The MPs are pledging their loyalty in exchange for being granted the privilege of (what is in practice) near complete ruling power for this country. I don't think it's sad at all because I have a high respect and appreciation for the monarchy to represent me and to bring many benefits to myself and my country. Also, it's actually the people who have the power because they are the ones who stand for election, who vote the MPs in, and who give the constitution power by obeying it.

      Sinn Fein's MPs don't take the oath at all, yet they are still MPs. They can't take their seats, speak in Parliament or vote in Parliament, but they still do the constituency work.
      The MPs featured in this video did in fact take the oath despite protesting against it.

      the concept is simple, in Britain the Crown is sovereign and as such oaths are sworn to the Sovereign of the state. Swearing any other oath is a foreign idea, completely incompatible with UK tradition and governance

      It's one thing to complain and another to refuse. You might note that the MPs featured here still took their oaths despite complaining. Consequently, their constituents will now be represented in Parliament.

      @@lanabmc3519 well, given the Plaid Cymru and SNP results at the last election I would say with some confidence a decreasing amount of people in Wales and Scotland and the northern Irish seem more keen than ever to stay British so your argument doesn’t stand up anymore I’m afraid. And regardless of whatever you may wish to be true is the head of state for the whole of the UK which last time I checked included Scotland, wales and N. Ireland.

    I think a lot of people don’t feel connected to the current monarch and wherever you support the abolition of the monarchy or want a full republic in the uk, I think there needs to be an alternative pledge/oath that can be taken where they commit their service to the people/ government rather than the monarch this would bring more inclusion I feel

      MPs are entitled to their personal opinions, just the same as you and I. You might care to note that these MPs, while expressing their distaste for swearing to the monarch (or for what they believe to be a silly tradition), nevertheless took the oath.

The entitlements and so called birthright promotes a sense for people to know their place. To bow down to lords, sirs, princess and kings is over. So if you can’t see that you’re puppet on the stings of the puppeteers of system of ‘class’, to dance to tune of your ‘masters’ then I’m afraid the insecurity lays with you.

The monarch (and the whole Royal family for that matter) work with maybe hundreds of charities, they act as a cultural ambassador, the monarchy is a large reason behind why the UK hasn't turned into a third world country when it comes to the economy. They work harder than most of us ever will, only in a different way. Also they do pay an income tax, and pay more in tax than most.

    Well done to them. MPs aren’t elected to represent the King, they’re there to represent their constituents.
    Even if you believe in the monarchy, surely you can recognise that the House of Lords (that around 70% of brits want to abolish) is there to be the house of King and Nobility.
    Our MPs should take their oaths to us and to protect our wellbeing and human rights.
